Facts about the 2011 World Ski Championships

When, what, where

  • The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will be held at Holmenkollen in Oslo 24 February - 6 March 2011.
  • There will be 21 cross-country, Nordic combined and ski jumping events, as well as a number of cultural and festival events.
  • All the events will be held at Holmenkollen’s new National Arena, which consists of the Holmenkollen hill (K-120/HS 134), the Midtstuen hill (K 95/HS 106) and the cross-country stadium. The official medal ceremonies will take place in the centre of Oslo.
  • The WSC will be the biggest sporting event in Norway for many years. The organisers expect about 650 competitors from more than 60 nations, 1,800 media representatives, at least 300,000 spectators and several hundred million TV viewers all over the world. 

Goals

  • The goal for WSC 2011 is to create the best ever world championships on skis. It will be a sporting and popular festival involving the whole country and leaving a lasting impression.
  • The competitors should enjoy optimum sporting conditions and a memorable public attendance in the world’s most modern ski arena.
  • The World Championships will help to upgrade facilities at Holmenkollen, market Oslo as the world’s winter capital, stimulate recruitment to and interest in competitive skiing and provide good experiences and memories for both Norwegians and the skiing world at large.

The organisers

  • Ski-VM 2011, which handles the organisation of the event, is owned by the Norwegian Ski Association (60%) and the Federation for the Promotion of Skiing (40%).
  • The CEO of WSC 2011 is Åsne Havnelid. The board is chaired by Svein Aaser.
  • The City of Oslo owns the facility at Holmenkollen and is behind the actual development of the new Holmenkollen National Arena (which consists of the Holmenkollen hill, the Midtstuen hill and the cross-country and biathlon stadium).
  • WSC 2011 has offices in the newly built WSC Pavilion in 7. juni-plassen in the centre of Oslo (outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The public are welcome to pop in.

WSC history

  • Norway has previously organised the World Ski Championships four times: in 1930 (Oslo), 1966 (Oslo), 1982 (Oslo) and 1997 (Trondheim).
